Choose a high-output UVB fixture that can reliably deliver the right UVB levels across your dragon’s basking zone. For most standard bearded dragon setups, a T5 HO linear UVB tube is the go-to option because it produces a stronger, more even UVB spread than compact or coil bulbs. As a rule of thumb, a 10.0–12% UVB-strength tube (often labeled “desert” or “high UVB”) works well for the species when paired with correct mounting distance and a quality reflector.

Pick a tube length that spans roughly half to two-thirds of the enclosure length so your dragon can move between higher-UVB basking areas and lower-UVB zones. Mount the UVB so it runs alongside the heat lamp over the basking spot—this encourages natural behavior: warming up while absorbing UVB.
UVB output drops quickly with distance and can be reduced by lids and screens. A mesh top can block a meaningful portion of UVB, so you may need to mount the fixture inside the enclosure (secured safely) or adjust the distance to compensate. Follow the bulb manufacturer’s distance guidance; many T5 HO setups land in the approximate range of 12–18 inches to the basking surface depending on screen density, reflector quality, and bulb strength. Provide a basking platform so your dragon can reach the intended UVB zone without climbing dangerously close to the lamp.
Even if the tube still looks bright, UVB output fades over time. Many T5 HO UVB tubes are replaced about every 12 months (some brands differ), while older-style T8 tubes are often replaced sooner. Keeping a consistent replacement schedule helps support calcium metabolism and reduces the risk of metabolic bone disease.

Compact/coil UVB bulbs can work in very limited situations, but they typically don’t provide the wide, even UVB coverage bearded dragons need. A T5 HO linear UVB tube is usually the safer, more consistent choice for creating a usable UVB gradient.
