What Does a Full Checkup Consist Of? Exams and Tests

What happens during a full checkup?

A full checkup is a preventive visit that brings together a conversation about your health, a physical exam, and any screenings that make sense for you. Your clinician will usually ask about symptoms, medications, family history, sleep, movement, nutrition, mental health, and changes since your last visit. It’s also your chance to bring up concerns you might otherwise put off, even if they seem unrelated.

What does the physical exam include?

Your clinician may check your blood pressure, heart rate, weight, and other vital signs, then examine areas relevant to your history or concerns. The visit can include listening to your heart and lungs and checking your skin, abdomen, or other areas, but a “full” checkup does not mean every possible exam is needed every year. Tell your clinician if an exam is uncomfortable or if you want to understand why it is recommended.

Which tests and screenings might you need?

Screenings depend on your age, personal and family history, risk factors, and when you were last tested. Your clinician may discuss cholesterol or diabetes testing, cervical cancer screening, breast cancer screening, colorectal cancer screening, sexually transmitted infection testing, or bone health; not all of these belong in every visit. Some screenings require a separate appointment, so ask what is due now and what can be scheduled later.

How can you make the visit useful?

Before your appointment, write down your questions and bring an up-to-date list of medications, supplements, allergies, and recent test results if you have them. Ask which findings need follow-up, when you should expect results, and when to return; that plan matters as much as the exam itself. Our Regular Check-Up for Women Guide can help you think through age-based screenings and wellness topics to discuss with your clinician, while your care team can tailor the plan to you.
